Reiki is one of those words that carries both mystery and simplicity. Some people hear it and think “woo-woo,” while others know it as a trusted path of healing and awakening. For me, Reiki has been both a personal transformation and a professional calling — and today, I want to share with you exactly what Reiki is, how it works, and why it’s such a profound tool for healing.
This post is meant to be a pillar resource: whether you’re brand new to Reiki or curious about deepening your practice, you’ll find history, science, spiritual insight, and practical wisdom here.

The word Reiki translates to universal life force energy. Rei means universal or spiritual, and Ki means vital life force energy — the energy that connects everyone and everything, all the time.
When you channel Reiki, you are literally channeling life itself. Reiki flows through the practitioner’s body and out through the hands (and sometimes the heart), radiating a harmonizing frequency. That energy can be sent to a person, pet, plant, situation, or even the planet itself.
Reiki is the frequency of harmony. Its very nature is to bring balance into our lives — gently, safely, and in alignment with the highest good.
Reiki originated in Japan with Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. His story has been told in many different ways, but what is consistent is this: Dr. Usui was a seeker of truth. In deep meditation, he received what he described as a lightning bolt of realization — that healing could flow simply by placing one’s hands with focus and intention.
He believed that to become a healer, one must first embark on their own healing journey. Reiki, he said, was universal — beyond labels or borders.
Usui taught his method to others, and through his students like Chujiro Hayashi and later Hawayo Takata, Reiki was brought to the West. Today, Reiki is practiced worldwide, both as a professional healing modality and a path of spiritual growth.
We live in a vibrational universe. At the quantum level, everything is energy — oscillating, moving, radiating frequency. Your body, though it appears solid, is a living vortex of energy. When your vibration is harmonious, you experience health and vitality. When it is discordant, dis-ease and imbalance can manifest.
Reiki works by restoring harmony at the energetic level. And while Reiki is ancient, modern science is beginning to validate what practitioners have always known:
Science continues to affirm what Reiki practitioners feel every day: Reiki brings the body into balance, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and supports true healing.
Reiki is:
Reiki is not:

One of the most important things to understand about Reiki is the role of the practitioner.
Whether you are receiving or giving Reiki, the practitioner is not the “fixer.” They are the channel. Reiki flows through them, not from them. The practitioner’s job is to hold space, set clear intention, and allow the energy to do what it needs to do in alignment with the highest good.
Sometimes Reiki feels like warmth, tingling, or deep calm. Sometimes it brings an emotional release or a sudden sense of clarity. Other times, it may be subtle — no sensation at all in the moment, yet shifts unfold in the days that follow.
Healing doesn’t always mean “curing.” Reiki may bring peace to someone in hospice care, relief to someone in pain, or clarity to someone at a crossroads. Reiki restores harmony, and harmony looks different for each person.
While each experience is unique, people often turn to Reiki for:
Reiki can be both gentle and powerful. For many, it becomes a way of life — a practice that uplifts daily living as much as it supports healing.

Reiki is more than a technique; it’s a path of awareness. The Reiki ideals — such as “Just for today, I will release anger,” or “Just for today, I will be kind to myself and others” — invite us into presence, peace, and compassion.
When practiced regularly, Reiki becomes a way of being. It helps us step outside of fear, release cultural conditioning, and align more fully with who we truly are. Reiki is both self-healing and universal — as you heal yourself, you naturally uplift those around you.
